The Cookie Cutter: Thomas the Train

Thomas the Train Sugar Cookies- www.thecreativeconfectionista.comWe celebrated my nephew's birthday this past weekend.  In honor of the occasion, I broke out my cookie cutters and went to work to make Thomas the Train sugar cookies.  They were a big hit and my nephew made my day when he said "Auntie, Thomas cookies! Ding! Ding! Ding!"  (he is a little obsessed with all things train!)  His little smile made all the effort (and late nights decorating!) well worth it.

This is the third time I've attempted decorated sugar cookies using the royal icing recipe from Sweet SugarBelle and my first time trying to copy a beloved children's character.

I don't decorate cookies often enough to make purchasing an image projector worth it (plus I don't have the storage for one) so all of my decorating is free hand.  Because of this, I was a little worried about how the Thomas trains would turn out.  Thankfully, a steady hand and a picture of a Thomas train worked!  It's far from perfect but you can definitely tell what it is.

The great thing about decorating sugar cookies is that I'm learning something new each time I make them.  I'm getting better with icing consistency and figuring out which viscosity works best for different designs.  I also tried the gourmet writing pens for the first time.  I'm already looking forward to making some Valentine's Day cookies over the next few weeks.

If cookie decorating is something you are interested in doing, I can't recommend the Sweet Sugarbelle website enough!  It is chock full of great tutorials and tips, plus her ideas are off the charts CRAZY creative.
