The Cookie Cutter: Caution Construction Ahead

In 2012, I started the tradition of making Royal Icing Sugar Cookies for my nephew's birthday parties.  Some party themes are much more difficult than others.  (Thomas the Train cookies, anyone?)  My older nephew turned 4 years old and his party was all things construction which turned out to be one of the easier cookie themes.  And I was prepared!  I was armed with my letter "A", "4" and just happened to have a dump truck and excavator sitting in my pile of cookie cutters.  What can I say, I knew this day would come when I saw both shapes on The Cookie Cutter Company website.

The shapes were easy to make with the sugar cookie dough.  None of the edges were too thin which meant my cookies weren't falling apart and it made the baking quick.  Another plus was that I only needed to make a few colors for the icing.  This was a huge time saver!  The "A's" and "4's" were also fast.  All I needed to do was flood and then outline.  The real fun began with the dump truck and excavator decorating.  I had a general idea of what I wanted the cookies to look like and with each layer of icing the ideas kept flowing.  (Yes, that is dark brown sanding sugar as dirt!  How cute!)  To top it off, my husband had the brilliant idea of adding the "CAT" logo to the excavator.  I really love how they turned out!
